Home Modification
Posted: July 8, 2025, 12:49PMMany older homes were not built for 'aging in place'. Bathrooms are small and often on the second floor, and there are steps everywhere. What can we do to make our homes more accessible?
Small changes can make a difference. Are there throw rugs scattered about? What about electric cords? Do you have grab bars in the bathroom? Are there non-skid mats in the tub? Fall hazards need to be eliminated.
Adding door levers instead of door knobs make access easier for arthritic fingers. Ramps may help loved ones when entering or leaving the home. Make sure that you have adequate lighting inside and out.
Bigger changes can make the home more accessible but cost may be a factor. Do you need to add a bathroom to the first floor? Do you need to add a bedroom on the first floor? Do cabinets or shelves need lowered?
