I'm taking care of my....
Posted: May 20, 2016, 11:30AMSo many of us take care of a loved one. Maybe we get groceries or help with paperwork or fold sheets...the list goes on. Maybe it's more intensive care and we help with bathing, filling medication dispensers, prepare meals, and / or run interference with the medical community. Any or all of those tasks make us a 'CAREGIVER'.
Why is it important to identify ourselves as caregivers? One reason is so we can learn what we are facing, come to terms with our role, and open our minds to learning about the illness, resources that are available, and get the help and support that we need. Maybe we do feel that caring for our parent or spouse is our responsibility or our duty. That doesn't mean that we are not caregivers!
Things won't be the same. And, probably, failing health or declining cognitive abilities weren't how we expected things to be. But, these concerns are often our "New Normal". We need to embrace that identity of being a caregiver and put ourselves in a position to learn and grow, and to accept and be at peace.
There is help out there and many of us are more than happy to offer information and support! Take advantage of the programs that you have in your community, and take advantage of your friends and family who are offering assist. People DO want to help. Call us if we can offer that assistance or guide you on where to turn in your community!
