World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Posted: June 14, 2022, 8:48AM

June 15 has been declared World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  This observation calls attention to elder abuse across the globe.

Abuse comes in many forms  The abuser may use physical force on an older adult.  They may be emotionally abusive.  They may be exploiting the older adult financially.  There may be sexual abuse.  The older adult may be experiencing any type or many types of abuse.

The abuser may be an adult child, a neighbor, a paid or unpaid caregiver, or someone in a facility.  They may be unemployed or they may be a bank president.  Abuse and abusers cross all races, genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic ranges.

Vulnerable adults (mental health challenges, dementia, impoverished, homeless, older, isolated, sexually diverse) are more at risk.

If you see abuse or suspect abuse, call 911 or contact the hotline in your state.
